After decades of development especially in the “eleventh five years”, China’s ethylene industry gains a considerable achievement. And most of the global new ethylene facilities are concentrated in China. Along with a series of ethylene facilities are being constructed and put into operation, the total ethylene production capacity reached 1494.9×104 t/a by the end of 2012. And China become the second largest ethylene producer in the world (the United State was the largest one with 2755.4×104 t/a). By the end of 2010 there were 26 ethylene producing corporations in China.

In 2010, the ethylene production capacity in different regions was as follows: the east China accounted for 42.4%, the northeast China accounted for 13.3%, and the north China accounted for 15.5%. The southwest area will break zero as the Sichuan ethylene facility is under construction.

China’s ethylene industry is developing towards large scale and base. The average scale of ethylene facility reaches 57.9×104 t/a, among which there are 5 sets of facilities with the scale of million tons or above. In current China there are 13 corporations with a ethylene production capacity of above 60×104 t/a, which accounts for about 81.6% of the total ethylene production capacity. The biggest production capacity reaches 122×104 t/a.

With the fast expanding downstream consumption demand, the ethylene equivalency consumption also increases rapidly. For many years, the self-sufficiency degree of China’s ethylene equivalency is about 50%. The ethylene equivalency consumption from 2006 to 2008 was 1986×104 t,2141×104 t and 2130×104 t. It reached about 3315×104 t in 2010 while it will reach 4003×104 t in 2015, and 4936×104 t in 2020.
