Since China establishes the price statistic of animal products and relevant production material in 1994, the pork price has gone through 5 bottoms and 4 completed cycles. The price of pig and pork is cycled and fluctuated in every 3 years which is named as “roller coaster” oriented price fluctuation. China is the biggest pork producer and consumer in the world. The pork production steadily ranks the first in the world for 10 years while the domestic pig livestock on hand accounts for 48.9% of the world’s and the annual livestock on hand exceeds 600 million. China’s pork production in 2010 is 50.7 million tons with a year-on-year growth rate of 3.7%. The pig farming mainly concentrates in coastal areas: the Yangtze River Valley accounts for 42.6% while the North China accounts for 22.5% and the southeast coastal area accounts for 16.8%. The pig market is relatively closed that the proportion of pig (not including boar) and pork exporting amount to total amount is less than 1%.

From 2007 to 2010 the compounded growth of fattening pig in China is about 5.13% while it will be about 50% for large scale farming corporations (with more than 50,000 pigs). From the beginning of 2008 to the end of 2010, the pig farming industry experiences violent ups and downs. The withdraw of pig farming household declines the activity of commercial baby pig and dual sow which leads to the decreasing pig livestock on hand in the next half year of 2010.
