Rice wine, beer, and wine are the world's three ancient liquors. The core selling point of rice wine is quite prominent while the selling positioning is easy to extract too. Besides, the consumption trend may promotes the sales of rice wine for it is healthier, lighter and with the healthcare function comparing with liquor. Therefore, the competitive advantage for rice wine should be quite obvious. But it is not the case in the actual market. According to the statistics released by State Statistics Bureau, the production of rice wine accounts for only 4%. The output is about 1.3 million tons while the Shaoxing wine is about 0.25 million tons that accounts for 20% in the rice wine industry. Comparing with the scale of domestic liquor, beer, and wine industry, the rice wine industry is of less strength.

After long period of silence, the rice wine industry shows a new developing trend since 2002 that the annual growth of output is about 10%. It is result from the fast development of industry and macro economy, efficient marketing of Shanghai rice wine since 2002, and market expansion of old brand Zhejiang corporations which represent as Guyue Longshan and Guijishan. The development space for the rice wine industry is enormous for the following reasons: the health nature of rice wine, enlightenment of regional consumer goods spread to nationwide such as Wang Laoji, and the upgrading trend of rice wine products. And as the industry has experienced a fast expanding stage since 2002, it is predicted that the growth rate of rice wine production and selling volume will decrease to less than 10% in the near future. The highlight of the industry is still the product structure upgrading. The advancing corporations begin to pay attention to the marketing of high price wine. The gradually expanding age liquor market and current inflation provide opportunities for rice wine corporations to improve product structure and increase the price.

View from the prospects, key for the second leaping growth of rice wine industry (it refers to the selling volume will reach or even break through the level in the year of 2002 to 2007) is to break through the traditional consumer market in Jiangxi, Zhejiang and Shanghai. Developing distance market needs abundant and continuous marketing investment. On one hand, the current industry is decentralized that the pioneers lack of abundant funds. On the other hand, the pioneers worry about the great efforts they make may bring great opportunities for competitors to share the market.
