Content Summary
Current these years, with the publicity and education from organizations like NCOH and other related manufacturers, the oral health awareness is gradually improving. In spite of this, the fast growth of China economy provides sound economic basis for the development of oral care. In 2002, China GDP per capita exceeds 1,000 USD and it breaks through 4,000 USD in 2010. The national income distribution changes a lot and the consumption is on the fast expanding stage. Residents pay more attention to the increasing medical healthcare standard. Referring to the experience in Taiwan, the fast development of economy provides sound conditions for promoting the growth of oral care demand.
Oral care is compatible with the concept of health and beauty and with good market concept and operational space. With the improvement of economy, cultural consumption level and oral health awareness, China oral care industry will have a fast development and great market potential now and in the future. It is so either considering from population size and the universality of oral diseases or from the aspects like market demand of dentist, cooperation and complementarity between oral health industry and other industries.
High Prevalence Rate and Low Treatment Rate for Oral Diseases
The prevalence rate of oral disease in China is extremely high that almost everyone has oral diseases in different degree. The
Third National Oral Health Survey shows that the prevalence rate of oral disease in China is as high as over 90%. The prevalence rate of baby teeth to 5-year-old group, permanent teeth to 12-year-old group, dental caries to 35-to-44-year-old group and 65-to-74-year-old group is 66%, 28.9%, 88.1% and 98.4%. Meanwhile, the periodontium healthy rate to the 35-to-44-year-old group in China is only 22.7%.
A sharp contrast to the high prevalence rate is that the exceedingly low treatment rate. The Third National Oral Health Survey shows that for the baby teeth to 5-year-old group whose prevalence rate is 66% only 3% of them have a treatment; while for the 65-to-74-year-old group whose prevalence rate is as high as 98.4% the treatment rate is only 9% to 22%.
Relatively Lack of Oral Health Care Resources
Benefiting from the growth of oral care market, the supply of domestic oral care hospital grows continuously with a relatively slow speed. By the end of 2010 number of oral care employees is 26,589 which is 0.63% of the total hospital employees, up 10,061 and with an annual compound growth rate of 7.03% comparing with that in 2003. Besides, according to the data from Health Bureau, number of stomatological medical practitioner is 51,000 (not including assistant doctors) which accounts for about 3% of the total doctor amount. There is still a serious shortage of dentists.
Comparing with the large medical demand in China, the allocation of domestic oral care resources is still in low level. By the end of 2010, number of hospitals in China is 20,918 while that of stomatological hospital is only 302 which accounts for 1.44%.
The index of per-capita dentist number shows that China oral care is relatively backward. In China every 10,000 people with less than 1 dentist, that means the ratio of dentist and population is about 1:12,000; however, the ratio in America, Western Europe and Japan is 1:625, 1:16,000 and 1:1,429 (calculating by the dentist amount from 2000 to 2010).
View from the doctor number for every 10,000 people gap between China and developed regions in the world is not big. That of China is about 50% to 70% of the developed regions’. However, if for the dentist case the gap is big.
Moreover, the oral care institution operators will coexist with public ownership and private ownership along with the issuing policy which allows the oral care institutions to introduce diversified operators into China, and the transformation of oral care institutes from simple public ownership to diversification. In other words, for the oral care institutions such as stomatological hospitals and the dental department to general hospitals will have both public ownership and private ownership. In the 21st century, China private oral care institutions will be more universal and play a significant role in oral care.
