China Biochip Industry Prospects and Investment Strategy Report, 2013-2017

Since the concept of DNA chip was proposed by Fodor and others in 1991, the biochip technology of which the DNA is the representative develops rapidly. The biochip research in China began among 1997 to 1998. Although it starts late, the technology and industry develop fast and it has gained a breakthrough from zero to some. The biochip has developed from the stage of technology research and product development to the stage of technological application and product selling. Moreover, it gets a relatively big achievement in the relevant equipment research and manufacturing of expression profile chip, major diseases diagnosis chip and biochip. China biochip market in 2008 is about 100 million USD and with a growth rate of over 20%. And now in 2012 it is 900 million USD.

Since 2000 Chinese government continuously invests large sum of capital to support the biochip system R&D. The establishment of R&D institutes--such as Beijing National Chip Engineering Center, Shanghai National Chip Engineering Center, Xi'an Micro Testing Engineering Center, Tianjin Biochip Co., Ltd., Nanjing Biochip Laboratory and so on--forms a firm basis for self-innovation and industrialization capability of such new and high-tech field in China. Among the institutes, the first two work as leaders, together with nearly 50 biochip research institutes and corporations in Tianjin, Xi’an, Nanjing, Shenzhen, Ha’er’bing and other places, a booming development situation is formed. The corporation structure is “Bo’ao in the northern China and Bo’xing in the southern China”.

Presently, due to the limitation of technology barriers, selling profit rate of domestic biochip is as high as 300% to 500%. And there are few competitors. Still, there are some corporations which continuously on the loss status mainly because of low technology commercialized degree or survival difficulties. It is predicted in the near future that profitability of China biochip market is still above 300%.

There are more and more research institutes and corporations involve in the field of biochip presently. Although there are still many related technologies which limit the fast development of biochip technology, with the continual investment and related technology development it is widely believed by oversea life science community, industrial community and medical community that the biochip will bring a reform for human being in the 21st century. To sum up, the biochip industry will be the biggest one in the 21st century.
