The aviation leasing industry is a sunrise industry in the service industry and with advantages of great economic promotion, strong tax creating capability, improving industrial structure and promoting relevant industries. The leasing aircraft become a practical choice for airlines as it with low cost, high flexibility and multi-financing channels. At present, the leasing aircraft is one of the fundamental means to update and enlarge flights for airlines in different countries. Among the global flights, the leasing aircrafts account for more than 60%. Since 1990s, the domestic airlines bring in large quantity of aircrafts mostly by the way of operating lease or financing lease. It partially releases the capital stress and achieves financing by leasing-assets.
Before the year of 1998, the airlines obtain the aircrafts by applying for loan from banks and purchasing directly. And the aircraft leasing industry starts since 1998. Up to now, about 40% of the flights in airlines are obtaining by leasing. The financing cost is high in China while the financing practice is difficult in the world for China’s airlines. And purchasing flights by loan will create great capital stress for corporations. Therefore, since the 1990s, many banks and other institutes in China (including Bank of China, State Development Bank, and China Citic Bank) start to make exploratory attempt in aircraft financing and leasing. And after some explorations and practices, at present, several banks (including Bank of China and State Development Bank) are involved in aircraft leasing industry by acquisition and buying shares.
Presently, China has become the second largest aircraft leasing market in the world. It is predicted that by 2025 the scale of civil aviation will be 3000 with the leasing rate of 60%. It means there are about 1,600 leasing aircrafts will enter China market. In other words, the amount of China aviation leasing market will be about 130 billion USD. The market potential is huge and prospects are booming.
