After the fast development, the packing industry in China nowadays with a certain production scale and forms a relatively complete industry system which including materials, products, machine, packing and printing, design and R&D, etc. It has become an important part of China’s manufacturing. The packing products whose annual output tops in the world including corrugated cardboard, plastic bags, composite flexible packaging, and metal drums. Among which the corrugated cardboard ranks the second in the world.

In 2011 there are 7,977 corporations of scale in China’s packing industry; number of the industry employees is 1.4355 million; industry capital is 601.541 billion Yuan; total sales revenue is 911.263 billion Yuan; total benefit is 63.499 billion Yuan.

Regions in China with the fastest development for packing industry are Yangtze River Delta (Shanghai, Zhejiang, Suzhou and others), Pearl River Delta (Guangdong as major), and Bohai Economic Area (Shandong as major). In 2011 the total output value of Guangdong, Shandong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang accounts for about 53% of the packing market in China.

Generally, gap between China’s packing corporations and foreign corporations is significant, especially in the aspects of brand value, products’ technical content, product quality, scale effect, productivity effect, technological level, R&D capability, and staff quality. For the products’ technology, the packing products with bigger disadvantages in quality, variety, and performance comparing with that of the developed countries. The domestic corporations lack of independent intellectual property, products with well-known brand, and innovation technology. For the development of China’s packing industry, our suggestions are as follows: first, lower the cost to maintain the price advantage; second, enrich the technology content and improve the products’ quality; third, improve after-sale service and seek for reliable agents actively.

Presently, the per-capita packing consumption in China is only 3-4% to that of the developed countries. However, China’s economy is growing steadily, the urbanization is fastening, and people’s living standard is improving. It will bring a sum of packing consumption which enables an enormous potential market to the packing industry in China.
