China Service Robots Industry Development Prospects and Investment Forecast Report, 2013-2017

A service robot is the youngest member in robot family, which can be divided into service robot in professional field and personal/household service robot. Service robots have a wide range of applications, mainly concentrating in maintenance, repairing, transportation, cleaning, safeguarding, rescuing, and monitoring, etc. At present, there are at least 48 countries developing robots, of which there are 25 countries involving in developing service robots. In Japan, North America and Europe, there have been 7 types of service robots, with more than 40 kinds of service robots entering experimental and half-commercial application.

In recent years, the global market maintains a fast development trend. According to data from International Federation of Robotics, the sales volume of serving robots in global special fields reached 13,741 in 2010, with a year-on-year increase of 4%, and the sales revenue was 32 billion US dollars, with a year-on-year increase of 15%, the sales volume of personal/home service robot was 2.2 million, with year-on-year increase of 35%, and the sales revenue was 538 million US dollars, with a year-on-year increase of 39%.

The development of service robot industry in world range (mainly for developed countries) has vast markets. Due to the increasing of labor force and people’s unwillingness to take their unlike jobs, there are less and less jobs similar to cleaning, nursing or guarding in developed countries. In order to fixing the shortage of these kinds of simple labor force, service robot industry comes into being.

Moreover, there are a lots of problems caused by population aging around the world, such as nursing the old, and medical healthcare problems, which bring a huge burden to solve them. Since service robots can greatly save the fiscal revenue, a large quantity of service robots are widely adopted.

Compared to some developed countries like Japan and US, the research and development of China service robots industry starts relatively late. With the help of national 863 plan, China has conducted a plenty of work on research and development of service robots, and has gained some result, such as the tour-guide robot researched and developed by Harbin Institute of Technology; the nursing bed robot researched and developed by South China University of Technology and the smart wheelchair researched and developed by Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, etc.
